Understanding the Issues

IISD strives to provide access to credible and timely information regarding climate change, energy and sustainable development that is accessible to the public as well as experts in the field. This includes up-to-date coverage of the latest happenings within the international climate change negotiations as well as presentation of the knowledge gained through the activities of the institute's Climate Change and Energy Program team. In addition to our publications on climate change and energy issues, IISD provides access to our knowledge through a variety of electronic information sources.

Current Reporting

Through the Linkages Web site, IISD's Reporting Services team provides general information on past, on-going and upcoming international meetings related to development and environment policy. Key resources include:

• Earth Negotiations Bulletin. The ENB provides neutral and authoritative daily coverage of multilateral negotiations on environment development, including current and archived reporting on climate change meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

• Your Meeting Bulletin. Provides coverage of conferences, workshops, symposia or regional meetings outside the UN process that provide important inputs into the policy-making process.

• Climate-L. This electronic mailing list reaches approximately 5,000 subscribers and provides the latest information on climate change policy and international negotiations. Subscribe to Climate-L.

The following opinion pieces have recently been released by IISD:

• ICTs, Adaptation to Climate Change, and Sustainable Development at the Edges
  IISD Associate Don MacLean explains the potential role of information and communication technologies is fostering the new creative capacity that is one of the keys to adapting to the impacts of climate change, particularly in the most vulnerable regions of the world.

• On the Way to Copenhagen
  In this column, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shares his views on the 2009 climate conference in Copenhagen and on the UN's commitment to the issue. This guest article was written by the Secretary-General for the first issue of IISD's new publication, CLIMATE-L.ORG Bulletin.

• The Security Dimensions of Environmental Policy: Canadian defence policy changes along with climate in the suddenly accessible Far North
  IISD Project Officer Alec Crawford discusses how Canada's longstanding concern about Canada's Arctic sovereignty and security are increasingly shaped by climate change and the resulting reduction of sea ice. This commentary appeared in the Toronto Star on July 8, 2008.

• Statement to the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development
  On January 28th, 2008, the Director of IISD's Climate Change and Energy Program, John Drexhage, spoke to the Standing Committee about the outcomes relating to the 13th United Nations Climate Conference in Bali, Indonesia and its implications for Canada's role in the next two years of international climate negotiations.
